"The Open Window"

Sometimes people miss the whole truth because they create their own version of reality. Vera, the main character in "The Open Window," makes up stories. How do her stories change the way she sees the truth about the world around her?

  1. She changes the truth and makes it real to someone else, to her, something so normal could be made into something so interesting so she lies and makes those stories to make it more entertaining for her.

  2. Her stories change the way she sees the truth about the world around her because she is creating stories(lies). She exchanges the truth for lies and those lies becomes someone else's reality.

  3. She changes the truth and when we change the truth its became a lie, and the lie is the truth to the person who she told it. The person who listen believes lies and this makes Vera's stories more interesting and make the listener more interested in the story told. It's caught the listener atention and makes him or her, believes and it sounds more real to the listener than the person that told it, in this case Vera.

  4. Her stories change the way she sees the truth because her "reality" was that her aunt's husband and two brothers had died. Some people lie so much they believe themselves and that is the case with Vera, creating stories that even I at first believed.

  5. Her stories might actually mean what she actually wanted to happen in that situation. She tells all those lies to amuse herself but at the same time it becomes the reality to the listener who doesn't know her or her imagination.

  7. She change the stories making them more "interesting" and attractive to the one who is listen. The stories seem more real when she change them. And that is lying because she is telling a story that was real but now that she change it it's not completely real is part real and part fiction.

  8. When a person is used to lie & make stories, at a certain point, they start believing those lies. It becomes your "own type of truth" and you will not find a way out of it. She said the stories/lies so vivid and real that the people around her and even herself believed them as truth.

  13. Her story changes how she sees the truth about the world around her because she was about to make history real to the reader. This makes the story much more interesting because it lets the imagination flow and makes the story attracts more attention of the reader.

  14. Vera behaves like an artist; she creates stories based on domestic events, incidents to affect people, the audience in ways that can't be foreseen. Her joke on Mr. Nuttle is a demonstration of how art can transform reality with unexpected results. Vera is not cruel, she is just showing her talent for rewriting reality. I think she does it because she can't help herself, like any true creative artist. She creates her own rules and the audience goes all the way her or abandons her with her personal satisfaction of having created something unique.

  19. I think that maybe she wants to see others reaction, maybe she even like to call the attention of others since she is a girl and she cant go with the others hunting. That changes the way she sees the truth because with all of those lies she can even believe it and maybe thats why she was so surprised to see them when they got by the window.

  20. Vera creates a new world for herself with her stories. I believe she creates them to develop something she finds interesting and witty.
The case with Mr. Nuttel is that she realizes that he knows nothing about Mrs. Sappleton or her family, and takes this chance to construct a "story" for her enjoyment. She uses irony to add an amusing end to her story.
What Vera does not realize is that as soon as she starts creating these stories, she starts believing them. Believing her own lies. And as fast as she commences to tell them, she may harm others.
Thus, Vera "sees the truth about the world" through her stories.

  21. In this story, Vera changes the stories and changed the way she feels and sees the outside world by making up lies and changed the way people think. So people started to believe those lies she was telling. But what Vera wasn't noticing was that she was starting to believe the lies she was telling and she didn't know that all of this lies are going to become real in her life.

  26. Vera's lie changes the way she see the truth around her because she wants people to believe and fall for her lies and imagination. She wants peolple to believe in what she wants to create that in one way or another involves her reality and as a main motive to the truth. In conclusion, Vera is a self-possessed and mature girl who loves to create stories and make people believe them but we can later see that in one point of her lie becomes the truth about her own reality in life.

  29. People who lie alot tend to believe their own stories. Vera's specialty was making up stories at short notice, in other words lying. I think Vera wanted Nuttel to believe her so badly that she lived the part like an actris that she ended up getting caught in her own web of lies. Her constant lying changed the reality she knew that was that they weren't really dead.

I think it changes it in a way that is overly dramatic because she turned her uncle's normal outing into a tragedy. I'd say her creativity is on an other-world phase because she took a simple case, changed it and told it as a way to not only make people look a her aunt as a mentally unstable person but also to scare Mr. Nuttel and make him believe it as he saw the "missing, dead" people walk in.

She decided to lie when she noticed about Mr. Nuttel's nervous problems, so that truth about him made her invent the false story about the family. Her story change the way she sees the truth because it was real in some things, it was true that the hunters were coming to the house in the afternoon, so that makes the story more interesting and not only changed the way she sees the truth but to the reader too.
